NMA declares strike over doctor’s death in Lagos hospital

The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) yesterday declared an indefinite strike over the demise of their female colleague, Dr. Diaso Vwaere.

Recall that Dr Vwaere died as a result of injuries sustained when she was trapped in an elevator at the Lagos General Hospital for more than 40 minutes.

In an issued statement signed by its Chairman and Secretary, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu and Dr. Ismail Ajibowo, respectively, the NMA declared a 5-day state-wide mourning over Vwaere’s death.

The association called on all doctors in the three State Hospitals to commence an indefinite strike, while demanding an investigation and justice for their deceased colleague.

The association appealed to its colleagues to remain calm, saying its Lagos State leadership is on top of the situation and will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that justice is not just served but seen to have been served.
